Prysmian Group says it has won the supply of 770 km of submarine fiber cable to Brazilian ISP Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP). The submarine cable will be deployed along riverbeds as part of the Norte Conectado project. The route will connect Macapá to Santarém and Alenquer north of the country’s Amazon region.

The Norte Conectado Program aims to expand and improve communications infrastructure, network security, and reliability in northern Brazil. Prysmian says its MINISUB submarine fiber cable will enable connectivity to 9.2 million households in 59 municipalities in northern Brazil, with the possibility of extension to other Amazonian countries.

Because the riverbeds are environmentally sensitive, Prysmian says it will leverage non-intrusive techniques during the riverbed deployments. The high-fiber-count MINISUB cables will be deployed in repeaterless configurations in four separated links. Prysmian plans to manufacture the cables at its production plant in Nordenham, Germany for delivery in the second half of 2021.

“We are honored to contribute to this valuable project and support sustainable development by improving the data connectivity for the local communities and public institutions. Prysmian has been operating in Brazil for more than 90 years and is in the unique position to serve its customers directly from there,” stated Ashutosh Bhargava, Submarine Telecom BU Director, Prysmian Group. “This project confirms our expertise in providing state-of-the-art fiber-optic submarine cable solutions and the great technical and commercial value propositions of our products.”
