Reliance Communications India has signed a contract with ZTE Corp. (0763.HK/000063.SZ) to supply optical transport systems for deployment of a metro 100-Gbps Optical Transport Network (OTN) fiber-optic network, according to the Chinese systems house. The company also will supply network design, engineering, installation, and operations and maintenance services in Pune and Hyderabad over the next three years.

ZTE says it will supply its ZXONE series to support Reliance's multi-service access and high integration requirements. The company says it won the deal at least in part because of the equipment's low total cost of ownership (TCO).

Reliance Communications India is the fourth largest operator in India, with a 14.35% share of the market, ZTE says. Growing bandwidth demands have led the operator to move from its current SDH network to a more modern 100-Gbps OTN infrastructure, the systems house adds.

The upgrade will focus, at least initially, on networks in Pune and Hyderabad.
