GVTC Communications taps LightRiver, Ciena for fiber-optic network upgrade
LightRiver Technologies, Inc. says it has executed a contract from GVTC Communications, which provides telecommunications services in Texas, to upgrade and expand its fiber-optic network infrastructure. LightRiver supplied a range of engineering and installation services for the upgrade, which leveraged the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform from Ciena (NYSE:CIEN).
GVTC, headquartered north of San Antonio, operates a fiber-optic network with with more than 2,200 miles of fiber-optic cable. The upgrade will help the service provider meet the goals of the GigaRegion initiative, in which GVTC has partnered with the cities of Boerne, Bulverde and Gonzales to deliver gigabit Internet services.
The new capabilities also will enable GVTC to build low-latency rings between San Antonio and Austin to serve content providers and wireless carriers as well as carrier-class Ethernet access and protected transport services to customers throughout Central Texas.

GVTC will now be able to easily facilitate network-to-network interfaces and deliver a highly resilient and dependable network connecting rural and metro markets."
LightRiver provided a turnkey package of services, from consultative engineering and architectural design support to "manufacture-certified" installation of the network. The company says its technical staff provided network design review, site surveys, and recommendations for site readiness, along with detailed engineering and comprehensive methods of procedure for installation, and test and integration.
