Alpheus Communications, a provider of Texas metro-regional fiber, says it is expanding its fiber-optic network in Houston and Dallas, where fast-growing businesses are demanding affordable data connections to their multiple office locations and data centers.

With the company’s strategic investments over the past decade, Alpheus already has fiber connectivity to more than 300 central offices and carrier points-of-presence (PoPs) in Texas and can now more rapidly deliver fiber directly to the business premise.

Alpheus plans to invest up to $12 million for the network expansion, which will add over 3,000 near-net business locations to its network in the initial phase. The company also expects to hire network engineers and other staff to manage the expanded network and provide service to customers.

Businesses will benefit from the Alpheus network expansion in several ways, including access to affordable bundles for bandwidth, voice, and data center colocation services from a single provider. For example, Alpheus can deliver dedicated, synchronous Internet access or network transport up to 1 Gbps for data and voice services. It can also provide data center colocation in its newly expanded Austin data center for customers' cloud computing and other remote hosting needs, including backup and disaster recovery.

"Alpheus has a long history of finding innovative ways to leverage our assets for delivering new services with the speed and affordability that differentiates us from larger service providers," said Alpheus CEO Scott Widham. "Bringing fiber to fast-growing areas means businesses will have the level of bandwidth needed for connectivity and access to services that they otherwise might not be able to find. This latest expansion builds on our history of delivering breakthrough offerings, such as being first with flat-rate, non-mileage pricing for T1s and widely deployed Ethernet services."

Because Alpheus is expanding the fiber cable network from its central office as aggregation points, taking advantage of existing network ducts, Alpheus can deploy fiber-based services to its customers more quickly. Other providers must invest in much larger infrastructure build-outs to reach outlying areas, a slow and inefficient process that ultimately drives up costs for the customer, the company asserts.
