OCTOBER 25, 2007 -- Hibernia Atlantic (search for Hibernia Atlantic) is offering native 40-Gbit/sec capacity over a subsea span between Boston and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Huawei Technologies (search for Huawei) has supplied the equipment to support the service. The link was built in 2000 with a 192-channel, 10-Gbit/sec system capacity. As part of ongoing network improvements, the Huawei platform enabled upgrade of the Hibernia Atlantic cable to a 192-channel, 40-Gbit/sec system; increasing the capacity from 1.9 terabytes to 7.68 terabytes.

The Huawei platform leverages the company's patented DRZ/ODB technologies. The systems vendor says that DRZ technology leverages widely available components, maximizing reliability while also assuring a robust supply chain. Huawei's 40G transponder features automatic electrical dispersion compensation to eliminate the need for dispersion compensation modules.

Anritsu (search for Anritsu) partnered with Huawei in testing the new service. Anritsu supplied the MP1591A network performance tester for the deployment test as well as the MP1595A 40G SDH/SONET analyzer.

"Hibernia Atlantic is pleased to work with Huawei Technologies' talented engineers to vigorously test and deploy this new 40-Gbit/sec capacity under the Atlantic," states Derek Bullock, vice president of network operations for Hibernia Atlantic. "North American and global investment banks, content providers, international PTTs, and ISPs in need of high bandwidth, now have a better network solution. With increased capacity on a reliable network at wholesale prices, companies can now deploy streaming video and other next-generation applications and services over the Hibernia Atlantic network, with confidence and ease. Already, our expert sales team is marketing this product today with commercial contracts slated to go live in the first quarter of 2008."
