Telefónica Spain to deploy Nokia 1830 PSS in its metro metro optical network

Nokia's says it has won a contract from Telefónica Spain to supply elements of its newly upgraded optical transport line for a metro network upgrade. The upgrade, part of Telefónica Spain's three-year Fusión Red project, will improve metro fiber-optic network capabilities in such high-population areas as Barcelona and Catalonia, with a goal of ultimately covering half of Spain.

Nokia's says it has won a contract from Telefónica Spain to supply elements of its newly upgraded optical transport line for a metro network upgrade. The upgrade, part of Telefónica Spain's three-year Fusión Red project, will improve metro fiber-optic network capabilities in such high-population areas as Barcelona and Catalonia, with a goal of ultimately covering half of Spain.

The Fusión Red project comes as Telefónica Spain's success with its Fusión quadruple play bundle, and particularly its Movistar TV service, has threatened to overwhelm its existing network. Fusión currently has more than 15 million fiber lines and 4 million pay-TV subscribers. The project will see the service provider evolve its network to a new end-to-end IP MPLS infrastructure, which also requires advanced optical transport capabilities.

"The demand for video as part of our Fusión service has moved our data traffic to levels never before seen. We have, however, anticipated this growth and are evolving our network through our Fusión Red project - first for IP, and now at the transport layer," explains Javier Gutierrez, director of network strategy and development at Telefónica Spain. "Nokia's optical portfolio is precisely the future-proof, next-generation solution we need to stay ahead of customer demand for many years to come."

Nokia will supply elements of its optical transport portfolio, recently enhanced with the introduction of the Nokia Photonic Service Engine version 2 (PSE-2; see "Nokia upgrades 1830 PSS packet-optical transport family with new coherent chipsets, improved multi-rate performance"). The platforms will include the Nokia 1830 PSS-24x packet-OTN switch as well as the 1830 PSS 500G DWDM Muxponder and CDC-F Wavelength Routing technology. The new platforms will support metro access, aggregation, and core mesh connectivity, Nokia says.

Telefónica Spain previously had awarded contracts to Nokia and Juniper Networks for the metro IP portions of the Fusión Red project (see "Telefonica awards Nokia additional Fusion Network role" and "Telefonica to add Juniper Networks routers to Fusion Network core").
