Telesystem upgrades fiber-optic network with Cyan

Telesystem, a commercial communications services provider based in Toledo, OH, has begun to deploy packet-optical transport systems from Cyan (NYSE: CYNI) to upgrade its fiber-optic network, according to the optical transport and software defined networking (SDN) platforms provider.

The upgraded fiber-optic infrastructure, which covers parts of northwest Ohio and southern Michigan, aims to ensure Telesystem’s commercial, government, and mobile backhaul customers receive reliable Ethernet and wavelength services. This includes 99.999% availability and no more than 5.26 minutes of downtime per rolling year.

In addition to Cyan’s 2.8-Tbps Z77 and 600-Gbps Z33 packet transport platforms, Telesystem also will leverage Cyan’s SDN platform, Blue Planet, for service orchestration and network visualization.

“It is of paramount importance that we deliver services to our customers exhibiting the highest possible levels of reliability. Many of our customers, healthcare for example, simply cannot operate effectively without the critical and always-on network services Telesystem provides,” states Doug Ward, director of network operations at Telesystem. “Cyan was able to satisfy our requirements not only through state-of-the-art packet-optical technology, but also with sophisticated software tools that allow us to move toward a software-defined network architecture.”

Telesystem is a subsidiary of privately owned Block Communications, Inc., whose other holdings include cable MSO Buckeye CableSystem and daily newspapers the Toledo Blade and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
