27 MARCH 2009 - Alcatel-Lucent (search Lightwave for Alcatel-Lucent) and Delta Telecom, a next-generation telecom service provider in Azerbaijan, have further strengthened their cooperation for the upgrade and extension of Delta Telecom's optical transport network across the country. The service provider says this network modernization will enable it to "significantly increase the capacity and efficiency of the existing network" to deliver advanced services to its end users. Additionally, it will allow Delta Telecom to enhance its wholesale bandwidth offering for international traffic transit.
The deployment of the Alcatel-Lucent optical system will start in the country's capital, Baku, and will then extend to the major links connecting Azerbaijan with neighbouring countries, helping Delta Telecom strengthen its position as a major transit data provider between the Caucasus region, Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and China.
"In anticipation of the data traffic growth in Azerbaijan, we decided to modernize our nationwide carrier backbone infrastructure to strategically take a significant step in addressing our end users' demands," says Ramazan Valiyev, general director of Delta Telecom. "Alcatel-Lucent's optical solution will give us the resiliency, scalability, and outstanding service performance necessary to accommodate advanced services over time."
"This new contract further confirms our commitment to support Delta Telecom in advancing its backbone infrastructure for the benefits of its end users," says Ali Kancal, head of Alcatel-Lucent's activities in Turkey and Azerbaijan. "Our optical networking solution will help meet Azerbaijan's growing Internet and mobile traffic requirements by providing high-speed communications."
Under the terms of the frame agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will supply its Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) systems and 1678 Metro Core Connect (MCC) for traffic aggregation and mobile backhaul, along with the 1626 Light Manager (LM) for long-haul traffic transmission.
