Maxim releases single-chip 14G VCSEL driver and dual-path limiting amplifier

NOVEMBER 11, 2009 -- Maxim says its new 14G driver plus amplifier provides a wide range of programmable receiver and transmitter features and only 320 mW of power consumption.

NOVEMBER 11, 2009 -- Maxim Integrated Products has introduced the MAX3799, a single-chip VCSEL driver and dual-path limiting-amplifier device targeted at SFP+ Ethernet and Fibre Channel applications. Fabricated using Maxim's MBiC3 IC technology, the device delivers up to 14-Gbps performance, a range of programmable receiver and transmitter features, and 320 mW of power consumption. Packing the functions of two chips into one, says Maxim, the MAX3799 provides a low-cost, low-power chipset optimized for Ethernet 1000Base-SR/10GBase-SR and 2x/4x/8x/16x Fibre Channel transmission systems, thus simplifying transceiver bill of materials for module manufacturers.

A three-wire digital interface provides programmable receive functions such as data rate, LOS threshold, LOS squelch, LOS polarity, CML output level, signal-path polarity, slew-rate control, de-emphasis, and mode-select change time. Programmable transmit functions include modulation current, bias current, polarity, de-emphasis, eye-crossing adjustment, and eye safety control.

The MAX3799 is fully specified for operation over the -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius extended temperature range, and is available in a 5x5-mm, 32-pin TQFN package. An evaluation kit and SFP+ reference design are available.
