GigOptix offers EA modulator driver for 100-GbE applications

FEBRUARY 25, 2009 -- GigOptix Inc. has introduced the GX6220, a 28-Gbps Electro-Absorption (EA) modulator driver targeting the emerging 100GBASE-ER4 Ethernet standard for access network applications.

FEBRUARY 25, 2009 -- GigOptix Inc. (search for GigOptix) has announced the GX6220, a 28-Gbps Electro-Absorption (EA) modulator driver targeting the emerging 100GBASE-ER4 Ethernet standard for access network applications.

In every 40-km reach Ethernet transceiver, four GX6220 drivers are used in parallel between the MUX and the Electro-Absorption Modulated Lasers (EMLs). These transceivers are used as links connecting enterprises with a network provider central office (CO).

According to GigOptix, key features of the GX6220 include:

• Compatibility with the emerging 100GBASE-ER4 standard;
• Low power consumption;
• A small form factor;
• DC coupling with adjustable voltage offset;
• Low RMS jitter degradation;
• Adjustable eye cross point; and
• Differential input/single ended output.

The GX6220's low power consumption and small form factor enables easy integration in TOSA s and its 28-Gbps bandwidth enables the die to be used in 100G Ethernet applications using Forward Error Correction (FEC) encoding schemes, say company representatives.

"This device is a critical component for the transition to 100G, as it enables power efficient and cost-effective systems to be delivered by our customers," explains Julie Tipton, vice president marketing at GigOptix. "Despite the downturn, leading analysts anticipate the 100G infrastructure to roll out in 2010. We are focused on supporting our customers to be well positioned for the recovery with competitive new products to meet the bandwidth challenge," she maintains.
