JUNE 29, 2010 -- Cortina Systems Inc. has unveiled the CS4340, which it asserts is the industry’s smallest quad 10G electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) device. The company also announced the CS4214, a low-power variant of the CS4340 PHY for 10G SR/LR SFP+ line card and 10G/40G clock and data recovery (CDR) applications.
The Cortina CS4340 is a programmable four-port SFP+ PHY with integrated EDC and is available in a 15x15-mm BGA package. Its enables 48-port 10G or 12-port 40G line cards supporting both optical and copper links and compliant to the industry standards. It also can be used with QSFP modules. Between the two module types, the CS4340 is designed to support a wide variety of applications, including:
- 10GBase-SR
- 10GBase-LR
- 10GBase-LRM
- 10GBase-ZR
- SFF-8431 direct-attach cable
- Twinax passive cable
- DWDM optics
- 40GBase-SR4
- 40GBase-LR4
- 40GBase-CR4
It also can be used to support 10GBase-KR and other backplane applications.
The third-generation CS4340 PHY is designed to maximize data center, server, and switching efficiency with a low-power, low-latency PHY function implementation. Using a hybrid DSP analog architecture, Cortina says the CS4340 PHY has latency of less than 1 nsec. Competing offerings can be anywhere from 80 to 240 nsec, the company asserts.
The CS4340 PHY functionality supports four full-duplex 10G links. Both transmit and receive paths include CDR circuits. The device has an operating frequency range that covers GbE; 1G, 2G, 4G, and 8G Fibre Channel, SONET (9.5 to 11.3 Gbps), and 10GbE. The EDC capability enables the device to operate with linear SFP+ optical modules. The transmit path includes a 10Gbase-KR compliant three-tap transmit pre-emphasis capability.
The device is fully autonomous and does not require external processors to control the initial convergence or the dynamic adaption of the dispersion compensation. In addition, the device includes debug features and I/Os for device monitoring and control.
Meanwhile, the Cortina CS4214 contains all the features included in the CS4340 PHY. The SFI equalizer on the CS4214 PHY is capable of compensating loss introduced by the module connector and host board trace. The CS4214 PHY is complaint to SFF8431 limited interface and IEEE 802.3ba nPPI specifications. It enables 10G SR/LR SFP+, 40GBase-SR4/LR4 CFP, and QSFP modules.
