JUNE 5, 2007 -- The State of New Mexico General Services Department, Communications Division has selected Infinera (search for Infinera) to provide an optical network connecting the major state and local government, research, and educational facilities throughout the state.
With 200 Gbits/sec of connectivity currently available in the network, the New Mexico network will enable local and state government offices to share information and information technology assets for greater productivity and economic efficiency, say Infinera representatives. The network also will connect to an existing digital microwave network that provides voice and data connectivity to rural areas of New Mexico.
When complete, the infrastructure will provide connectivity to renowned research institutions located in New Mexico, including the University of New Mexico system, New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech University, and all state government offices. Other plans include expansions to support tele-health, public safety, and education.
"We were impressed by the capabilities of Infinera's Digital architecture and the economics of their system," recalls John Martinez, director of the Communications Division at the State of New Mexico. "As technology advances, so does the need for greater capacity, and the Infinera platform provides the scalability to advance us many years into the future," he contends.
"We are excited to see a forward-looking state like New Mexico become the first state in the country to deploy a Digital Optical Network," adds Infinera CEO Jagdeep Singh. "With its ability to provide easily scalable bandwidth and carrier-class reliability at the affordable price points suitable for public organizations such as the State of New Mexico, we believe that Infinera is a great fit for government networks."
The Infinera DTN is architected to combine the scalability of DWDM transport, the flexibility of digital bandwidth management, and the intelligence of GMPLS service availability, say company representatives.
