Applied Optoelectronics offers new 100-Gbps PIN photodiode arrays for high-speed optical receivers

Optical transceiver, subsystem, and component provider Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. says it has developed 100-Gbps PIN photodiode (PD) arrays for high-speed optical receivers.

Optical transceiver, subsystem, and component provider Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (AOI; NASDAQ: AAOI) says it has developed 100-Gbps PIN photodiode (PD) arrays for high-speed optical receivers.

The InGaAs PIN PD is a front illuminated photodiode featuring a large modulation bandwidth, high responsivity, and low dark current. AOI says the product is a 4x25-Gbps PD array and is specifically designed for 100-Gbps optical transceiver modules for data center and 100G EPON transceivers for FTTH applications.

"High-speed photodiodes require high-quality epitaxial crystal material with very high purity in order to operate with low noise," said Dr. Jun Zheng, AOI's R&D division VP and head. "In addition, such high-performance photodiodes require very small aperture to achieve high bandwidth. Both of these requirements were achieved by our advanced metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) growth capability and mature wafer processing technology."

The PIN PD can also be used for PAM4 receivers applied in AOI 200G and 400G data center transceivers. According to the provider, the 25-Gbps singlet PD can be used in 25G SFP28 transceivers for 5G wireless and 25G EPON applications, as well as the 1x4 array.
