November 8, 2005 Meggen-Lucerne, Switzerland -- Litrax has introduced its 850-nm implant singlemode vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (SM VCSEL) and laser bundles for applications requiring a reflected signal. The company says the lasers are superior in ESD (> 1 kV), reliability, and performance, as compared to oxide VCSELs.

The company also says the laser provides cost and design advantages including compact size, low-threshold current, lower power consumption, and superior output power with a tightly focused beam, allowing the device to operate extremely accurately on many smooth surfaces.

"In the past 40 years the VCSEL has gone through a number of improvements that allow the user to expand the sensing capabilities of their products," observes Felix Stutz, president of Litrax, "These 850-nm SM VCSELs are ideal for low-cost sensing applications including laser mice, pointing devises, bar code readers, and range finders. The array can also be used for free space communication, as well as an IR lighting source for security, defense, and many other IR sources."

"In my over two and a half decades of working with and developing lasers, these implant SM VCSEL devices are definitely the most advanced on the market today in terms of performance and reliability," adds Prof. Y. J. Yang, Ph.D., inventor of the implant SM VCSEL and a professor in the Electrical Engineering department of National Taiwan University. "VCSELs have moved beyond the telecommunications market and play an important role in I/O devices, and in many other applications."

The implant singlemode VCSEL product complies with FCC Part 15 and Non-Harming Laser specifications according to IEC 60825-1 laser safety standard as Class 1, according to the company.
