Lightscape Networks announces expansion of optical networking platform

March 9, 2001
Mar. 9, 2001--Lightscape Networks, an international provider of optical networking technology, unveiled its extended next-generation XDM optical networking platform.

Lightscape Networks, a member of the ECI Telecom Group (NASDAQ/NM symbol: ECIL) and an international provider of optical networking technology, unveiled its extended next-generation XDM optical networking platform.

Specifically designed and optimized for the regional and metro core, the new XDM optical switch application provides carriers with a wide capacity range within a single shelf. Because the XDM operates at Low Order granularity, IP Layers 1- 3 with bit rates from 2Mb/s to 10Gb/s, GbE and lambda, it optimizes sub-lambda grooming and ensures that the capacity utilization of any lambda in the network can reach 95 percent.

"We added multi-service transponders, intelligent optical protection schemes, based on various types of data-aware performance monitoring, tunable lasers and optical switches on the same XDM platform," said Ido Gur, VP, product management of Lightscape Networks. "This way, one can deliver optical cross-connect and WDM line systems in the same shelf."

By combining these functions into one network element and operating in rings and mesh topologies, carriers are able to benefit from improved network efficiency and savings in cost and footprint. The XDM benefits from a revolutionary single architecture, which allows network cards to be interchanged between modules. This enables telcos to take advantage of optical networking technology in the network edge to the regional and metro core. It also allows them to gradually migrate to next-generation broadband services and mesh topologies in a future-proof, cost-effective fashion.

In the network edge, Lightscape Networks' new XDM platform is designed to provide a route to next-generation broadband services, and multi-service support, within a single data-aware device. Built from the ground up to solve bottlenecks in the network edge, XDM offers operators a cost-effective way of connecting multi-service broadband subscribers to the transport backbone without requiring an initial investment in numerous discrete systems (DWDM multiplexers, SDH/SONET ADMs, edge data switching and optical switching). This technology makes it much easier for telcos and service providers operating within the network edge to accomplish initial penetration of the emerging broadband services market, while also giving them a clear and simple migration path for the future.

XDM's single architecture equips telcos to take advantage of optical networking technology from network edge to the regional and metro core without a large financial risk.

The XDM family for network edge to regional and metro core is available worldwide immediately with prices starting from $25,000 for a basic network edge configuration, to prices ranging upwards from $50,000 for metro and regional core applications.
