Dec. 3, 2001--Bandwidth9 Inc. today announced a joint development agreement with Metro-Optix to integrate its MetroFlex tunable transmitter into the Metro-Optix CityStream bandwidth management platform.

Bandwidth9 Inc. today announced a joint development agreement with Metro-Optix to integrate its MetroFlex tunable transmitter into the Metro-Optix CityStream bandwidth management platform. The combined solution is designed to ease the burden of network management on today's metropolitan service providers by lowering equipment costs, increasing service flexibility, and providing an integrated solution to deliver a mixture of voice, Internet, and other data services.

"We believe adding tunability to our CityStream family of products will extend our leadership in the development of break-through approaches to bandwidth management for telecommunications providers," contends Arun Bellary, chairman and CEO of Metro-Optix. "Tunability is an important tool and will allow us to offer further cost savings and bandwidth efficiencies in complex metro networks, and it will be critical to the success of our service provider customers."

Bandwidth9's MetroFlex tunable optical transmitter product blends monolithic Vertical- Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) and Micro Electrical Mechanical Structure (MEMS) technology to enables precision tuning, direct modulation, and low-cost manufacturing. The Bandwidth9 transmitter tunes and locks to a specific wavelength in less than 200 microseconds and boasts a truly continuous tuning range that brings more deployment and provisioning flexibility to metro carriers, claim company representatives.

"Today's metro networks create specific challenges for service providers because the amount of traffic is increasing exponentially and is delivered via a wide variety of transport technologies," said Stephen Montgomery, president of ElectroniCast. "As a result, products that allow carriers to reduce capital costs, and at the same time utilize existing bandwidth more efficiently, present a very attractive proposition."

Jointly headquartered in Santa Clara, CA, and Allen, TX, Metro-Optix develops solutions to enable carriers to transition from traditional circuit-based services to cell and packet-based services. For more information, visit the company's Web site at www.metro-optix.com.

Bandwidth9 (Fremont, CA) designs and manufactures precision-tunable optical components and subsystems, based on its VCSEL and MEMS technologies, for metropolitan networks. For more information, visit the company's Web site at at www.bw9.com.
