ML6680 fiber-optic transceiver converts twisted-pair copper wire output from a token ring transceiver chip (ieee 802.5q) into a fiber-optic waveform (ieee 802.5j), which is impervious to electrical noise and can extend twenty times further than copper wire connections. Used in adapter cards, switches, hubs and concentrators, the chip operates at data rates of 16 or 4 Mbits/sec. It has full-duplex operation and pin-selectable phantom-wire fault detection. The transceiver contains an internal clock oscillator and a twisted-pair line equalizer, which compensates for copper wire dispersion that can give rise to intersymbol interference. Its output has a data quantizer that attaches to fiber- optic modules. The chip is priced at $22.80 in a 28-pin plastic-leaded chip carrier in quantities of 1000.
