SOLiD Technologies announces WDM-PON system for FTTH

AUGUST 24, 2009 -- The system is capable of delivering 16 WDM channels of Gigabit Ethernet over a single fiber core exceeding 40 km, the developer says.

AUGUST 24, 2009 -- SOLiD Technologies says it has succeeded in developing an advanced WDM-PON system for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) applications.

To date, most reasonable price-ranged WDM-PON systems use external seed light sources, which are limited in transmission distance and are exposed to vulnerability upon field conditions and critical system failure in case of seed light failures. Although a tunable laser can resolve most of the limitations and problems, it is not routinely adopted due to its high cost, says the company.

The system has the capability of delivering 16 WDM channels of Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) over a single fiber core exceeding 40 km. Unlike conventional WDM-PONs such as injection-locking and reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) where external seed light sources are used, the system uses what it says are more cost-effective tunable lasers with wavelength stabilization.

"The significance of this development is that this system enables service providers to meet the customers' greater bandwidth demands at the capex comparable to EPON and GPON as well as reduction in opex resulting from additional savings in the number of access fibers needed," according to Seung Hee Lee, chief executive officer of SOLiD Technologies.

SOLiD Technologies will be exhibiting the product at Broadband World Forum Europe 2009, Sept. 7-9, 2009, in Paris, France.
