MARCH 23, 2007 -- EMCORE Corp. (search for EMCORE) today announced the live demonstration and subsequent release to sampling of its 1550-nm DWDM long reach XFP optical transceiver module. The new EDW-9100-XFP will be demonstrated to selected customers at next week's OFC/NFOEC Conference in Anaheim, CA.

The new transceiver marks the expansion of EMCORE's portfolio of parallel VCSEL (search for VCSEL) and LX4 (search for LX4) optical modules for the 300-m multimode market into the long reach 10-Gbit/sec application space. This XFP is ideally suited for diverse applications, including SDH STM-64, SONET OC-192 LR-2, and 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GBASE-ZR), say company representatives.

"As one of the leading suppliers of parallel short reach and coarse wavelength division multiplexing [CWDM] interconnect products, we are excited about expanding our product portfolio into the dense wavelength division multiplexing [DWDM] and 100-km regimes," asserts Clay Hudgins, 10G module product line manager at EMCORE's Fiber Optics Division. "This product exploits the market- leading 1550-nm technology of our Ortel division, while maintaining a robust multi-sourcing strategy."

The EDW-9100 XFP is designed for long-reach, greater than 80-km applications for the WAN and long-haul markets. The 80-km DWDM segment has been experiencing double-digit growth quarter-over-quarter, notes the company, and with that growth, both the general market and its established customers are providing good entry points, says EMCORE.

The transceiver module consists of a transmitter with a cooled 1550-nm EML and a high-sensitivity receiver with an APD photodetector. The transceiver operates over a temperature range of 0 ° C to +70 ° C (case) and offers optimum heat dissipation and excellent electromagnetic shielding, thus enabling high port densities for 10-Gbits/sec systems, says the company. Key options for the RoHS 6-compliant module include C- and L-band coverage at 100-GHz ITU-grid spacing as well as private labeling.

EMCORE's C-Band EDW-9100-XFP will begin sampling to key accounts immediately following the live demonstration at OFC and will begin sampling in L-band configurations in the second quarter.

EMCORE will be exhibiting at the OFC/NFOEC Conference in booth #3142.
