JDS Uniphase Corp. today announced four new OA Series Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) that offer an alternative to the costly and lengthy design and manufacture associated with traditional, custom-built EDFAs, claims the company.

JDS Uniphase asserts that it can eliminate NRE (non-recurring engineering) costs and reduce delivery times to 1-8 weeks by providing standard designs as compared to the 12-36 weeks that is typical for custom-built EDFAs.

With the OA Series, JDS Uniphase can offer high-performance EDFAs to small- and medium-sized system providers without requiring the resources needed for custom development. Large system providers can improve their time-to-market by using OA Series EDFAs during their prototype cycles prior to developing custom amplifiers or they can eliminate custom development by specifying the OA Series for their production systems.

The new OA 1000, OA 2000, OA 3000, and OA 4000 deliver high performance as measured by gain, gain flatness, noise figure, and dynamic range. The models and options vary from a compact (107 x 79 x 17 mm) gain block available with low power dissipation (2W) to a high power (22 dBm), fully controlled EDFA with mid stage access. Other options include fast transient suppression, Raman optimization, and variable gain with a 15-dB range that can be set by the user.

The OA Series also includes the OA 500 (introduced as the MicroAmp) and the OA 500U (introduced as the Uncooled MicroAmp).

The OA Series contains models appropriate for all three basic applications of EDFAs: power or booster amplification used near the source of transmission, in-line amplification to send a weak signal through the next span of fiber, and pre-amplification used to strengthen a weak signal just before it enters a receiver. Models are available for Ultra-Long Haul, Long Haul, and Metro; single-channel, narrowband, and DWDM; and Raman-optimized designs.

The OA Series EDFAs are currently. Shipping began in 2001 with fulfillment of advance orders. Lead-time for sample quantities is approximately 1-8 weeks after receipt of order, depending on the model and options.
