Optical amplifier system

SpectralWave narrowband optical amplifier system extends span length and capacity of Sonet equipment. It combines outputs of eight 2.4-Gbit/sec channels into one fiber, supporting a total capacity of up to 20 Gbits/sec. The unit uses singlemode fiber, enabling providers to maximize the use of existing fiber plant, and features a 555-km transmission distance for five spans. This system provides transparent transport of existing OC-48 Sonet signals. All ring-and-span switching is under the control of the subtending OC-48 equipment, which can continue to operate without upgrade or modification. The device consists of a terminal network element and an inline amplifier network element. The terminal network element uses an input coupler and a booster amplifier in the transmit direction; in the receive direction, it employs a preamplifier and an eight-wavelength filter. The inline amplifier contains an alarm and control interface card that report alarm and status conditions. Each of the eight channels has alarm monitoring points. An embedded operations channel connects the end terminals to the intermediate amplifiers.
