March 28, 2006 Fremont, CA -- Avanex has introduced a low-loss dispersion compensation module (DCM) for use with both singlemode fiber and LEAF transmission fibers.
According to the company, lowering DCM loss allows for longer span lengths without redesigning or adding cost to existing network architectures. Avanex says its low-loss DCM maintains all critical optical specifications of standard dispersion management devices while dramatically reducing optical loss.
The company says its low-loss DCM reduces optical power loss by almost 50%, and also allows for broader "hut-skipping deployment," or placing DCMs in the network at every other node instead of every node, thereby significantly reducing network costs, according to the company.
"The technical challenge of substantially lowering DCM loss without compromising other performance attributes has previously prevented the introduction of these higher performing products," comments Dr. Giovanni Barbarossa, chief technology officer of Avanex. "Avanex has achieved this low-loss technology by a combination of improved dispersion compensating fiber and advances in our proprietary assembly techniques."
