MAY 12, 2009 -- JDSU (search for JDSU) has introduced the Medium Range Optical Dispersion Measurement (MR-ODM) module for the T-BERD/MTS-6000 and -8000 platforms. The single plug-in module includes a patented technology for chromatic dispersion (CD) measurements and offers polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and attenuation profile test functions, providing a compact and integrated dispersion measurement tool dedicated to field testing fiber-optic networks.
The MR-ODM module's combination of CD, PMD, and attenuation test functions allows technicians to validate the fiber link's compatibility with high-speed DWDM systems, including reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs). The performance of each individual function also makes the ODM module suitable for characterizing fiber at 40G and higher in the metro and access network area.
"Cable and telecom network operators deploying fiber networks to meet growing broadband demand need the right tools to ensure fiber links operate flawlessly," says Enzo di Luigi, general manager in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "JDSU meets this challenge by enabling efficiency through an integrated solution and offering the highest dispersion performance available in a field test solution by validating about 400 acquisition points in less than 30 s."
The test and measurement equipment provider claims the module is the industry's only CD, PMD, and AP analyzer with measurement points across the SCL-bands (1,450 to 1,640 nm). It has fast acquisition times, and it is test capable through non-bidirectional components (EDFA, filters, and similar components). It has internal and on-line wavelength referencing and a single input port for any test configuration. The MR-ODM is compatible with plug-in or handheld broadband sources at the far end of the fiber under test.
