May 12, 2004 Ottawa, Canada -- The National Capital Institute of Telecommunications (NCIT), a research organization headquartered in Ottawa, has selected Alcatel's Internet Protocol (IP) service router to enable new, leading-edge services on its advanced research network, NCIT*net.

NCIT, in collaboration with Alcatel's Ottawa-based Research & Innovation team, will deploy the Alcatel 7750 Service Router to offer Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) over a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) backbone network as part of the NCIT*net's focus on developing innovative applications and network services.

"Canada's National Capital region is rich in companies, such as Alcatel, who are dedicated to research in telecommunications. NCIT's mandate is to unite these organizations with our public research institutions in order to promote advanced research that leads to new technological developments," explains Dr. Maike Luiken Miller, vice president, Research Alliances, for NCIT. "Currently, the NCIT*net is undergoing a major upgrade to ensure its relevancy to leading edge research. The Alcatel routers are a part of this upgrade, permitting us to work with VPLS for the first time on this network."

"The Alcatel 7750 SR delivers the flexibility and quality of service capabilities necessary for this research organization to share information and data both securely and reliably," adds Hubert de Pesquidoux, CEO of Alcatel Canada. "At the same time, deployment of the Alcatel 7750 SR in an advanced research environment like NCIT also provides Alcatel's Research & Innovation team with a world class multi-vendor network environment in which to test new ideas."

According to Alcatel, the 7750 SR enables service providers to introduce scalable, advanced IP-based services, allowing them to attract and retain a wider customer base. In combination with the company's network management portfolio, the Alcatel 7750 SR also enables service assurance, provisioning, and a single point of operational support system integration.
