Windstream (NASDAQ: WIN) and Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) reveal they have been deploying Infinera's DTN-X platform as part of Windstream's fiber-optic network expansion strategy. Windstream Carrier Solutions provides wavelength transport services up to 100G across the U.S., using Windstream's DWDM Long-Haul Core Network.

With the deployment of the Infinera packet-optical transport systems, Windstream has achieved the following in its network expansion plans this year:

  • 12 new 100G markets, including Buffalo, Denver, Houston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa
  • 3,900 additional fiber route miles featuring Infinera's 500G superchannel technology
  • A 20 Day Express Install guarantee for customers using the Long-Haul Core Network.

"It's clear," notes Bob Jandro, Infinera's senior vice president of worldwide sales, regarding this last point, "that in addition to the need for scale and efficiency, network operators value the ability to turn time into a competitive weapon by delivering the high capacity services their customers want quickly and more reliably than their competitors."

Meanwhile, Windstream plans to expand 100G service to seven additional markets, including Minneapolis and Louisville next month, and add 5,600 route miles to the Long-Haul Core Network to provide additional diverse routing options from major cities. Overall, it plans to offer 100G services in 44 markets by the end of this year.

"Windstream is positioned to provide long-haul and metro services in both Tier 1 and tertiary markets, often via diverse carrier routes," says Joe Scattareggia, vice president of sales for the carrier and content verticals at Windstream Carrier Solutions.
