Coriant has announced a 400-Gbps muxponder for the Coriant Groove G30 Network Disaggregation Platform that consumes 0.20 W per gigabit. The power consumption figure is 50% lower than that of the nearest comparable module, the company asserts. The muxponder also offers enhanced spectral efficiency.

The 400G muxponder leverages 16-nm CMOS technology as well as the company's proprietary CFP2-ACO optical transceivers codeveloped with sister company Elenion Technologies (see "Coriant offers 200-Gbps short-reach CFP2-ACO for Groove G30 platform"). The unit is compatible with fielded Coriant Groove G30 systems to enable "pay-as-you-grow" capacity scaling.

The spectral efficiency gains, alongside improved optical reach, come from the muxponder's use of 200G/8QAM programmable modulation. Overall, Coriant says the new muxponder enables network operators to deploy a complete DWDM transport system – including muxponding, optical multiplexing, and amplification – within a single rack unit with up to 1.6 Tbps of capacity. This design obviates the need for a separate optical line system and thus reduces space and power requirements, Coriant points out.
