Huawei this week unveiled the OSN 9800 M24 metro Multi-Service Optical Transport Network (MS-OTN) platform. The system is designed to help network operators more efficiently support OTN capabilities in their central offices.

The systems house sees a variety of new traffic demands for zero congestion, zero packet loss, and low latency converging on space-constrained central offices. With OTN capabilities growing in importance for such systems, Huawei says the OSN 9800 M24 will enable central office facilities to keep pace with these more complex demands without exceeding space and power limitations. The platform's benefits include:

  • Support of "all existing services" in metro networks, Huawei asserts, including residential broadband, mobile broadband, and high-quality leased-line services. This ability can reduce the need for additional devices.
  • A single-subrack cross-connection capacity of more than 2.4 Tbps with expansion headroom to support such future services as virtual/augmented reality and 5G mobile.
  • Common modules with the Huawei OSN 9800 and OSN 1800 systems.
  • Reduces power and space requirements.

"Huawei's all-service bearing OSN 9800 M24 offers a compact structure, flexible deployment, and easy O&M enabling an OTN-to-CO simplified optical network to be fully implemented in operators' metro networks," said Richard Jin, president of Huawei Transport Network Product Line.
