Zayo chosen by major global carrier for dark fiber in the UK

Zayo Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: ZAYO) says that a major global carrier has selected it for dark fiber infrastructure in the UK. The deal includes 1,100 miles (1,800 km) of dark fiber linking several data centers throughout the UK. Zayo has not named the customer.

To support existing bandwidth needs, prepare for 5G, and broaden its customer base, the global carrier requires a high-capacity, low-latency infrastructure in the UK. The carrier chose Zayo to meet its demand for a service that can grow with customer needs for agility, low latency, and scalability, says the company.

European mobile operators are enabling network upgrades to address data demand from an increaseof devices. Stretching from Glasgow and Edinburgh in the north, to Birmingham and Manchester, Zayo's UK network includes dense metro fiber in London. According to Zayo, densifying the terrestrial network will maximize spectrum to enhance capacity and performance.

"We have a strong relationship with this carrier and have worked closely with them to provide a dark fiber solution that delivers high performance and low latency to support a growing volume of data traffic," said Annette Murphy, Zayo managing director of Europe. "The carrier is relying on the infrastructure as a key element of its strategic growth and densification efforts."

The UK dark fiber service is the first phase of Zayo's multi-phase mobile infrastructure project for the customer. The company unveiled plans for building its first facility in the London metro area, a new zColo data center facility in Feltham, UK near Heathrow Airport, earlier this year (see "Zayo targets Feltham for new UK zColo data center").
