Edgecore Networks has used this week’s OCP Regional Summit in Amsterdam to announce that its ASXvOLT16 10G PON optical line terminal (OLT) has been fully approved by the Open Compute Project (OCP) and to unveil a line of OCP-related GPON OLTs. The 10G PON and GPON OLTs are disaggregated platforms designed to operate in software-defined networking (SDN) access network environments.

The company offered the ASXvOLT16 to OCP at this time last year (see “Edgecore Networks offers ASXvOLT16 whitebox PON OLT design to Open Compute Project”). The platform conforms to the “AT&T Open XGS-PON 1RU OLT” OCP specification; AT&T has conducted field trials of open XGS-PON platforms (see “AT&T finishes open source XGS-PON field trials”). The ASXvOLT16 10G OLT offers 16 XFP ports that can support 10G XGS-PON or NG-PON2 architectures, as well as 4x100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) uplinks. The platform is available now, and DASAN Zhone Solutions is offering it for sale.

Meanwhile, Edgecore Networks says it is readying a line of GPON OLTs that conform to the “Deutsche Telekom Open GPON-OLT Specification” approved via the OCP Telco Project. The ASGvOLT32 and ASGvOLT64 GPON OLTs will provide 32-ports and 64-ports respectively of GPON, with 2x100GbE uplink ports for the former and 8x25GbE uplink ports for the latter. Edgecore Networks expects the GPON OLTs to sample in the first quarter of 2019 and become available in volume the following quarter.

Both the XGS-PON and GPON OLTs incorporate ONIE, Open Network Linux, Open Optical Monitoring (OOM) API, the Redfish hardware management API, and the OpenOLT Adapter (vOLTHA driver) for operation in SDN Enabled Broadband Access (SEBA) or R-CORD open infrastructures as defined through the Open Network Foundation (ONF). The OLTs also will be compatible with commercial OLT software from Aricent, according to Edgecore Networks.

“The OCP Telco Project has been enabling true collaboration among service providers and vendors in the specification and designs of open PON OLTs to meet operator requirements to deliver scalable, manageable broadband access services. We are pleased that Edgecore will add to its OCP-Accepted XGS-PON OLT by contributing designs of open GPON OLTs in conformance to the Deutsche Telekom specification,” commented Bill Carter, CTO of the OCP Foundation.
