TransWorld taps Calix to build fiber-based rural broadband business

Jan. 25, 2021
Serving multiple U.S. regions, TransWorld Network Corp. says it has selected a comprehensive range of Calix platforms to rapidly grow a business that excites subscribers.

Calix, Inc. on Jan. 14 announced that TransWorld Network, Corp. (TWN) has selected end-to-end solutions and services from Calix to accelerate its fiber-network buildout across the U.S. The company plans to add a new fiber-based business model and will use the Calix Intelligent Access EDGE and Revenue EDGE products, and the Calix Services platform, to differentiate its subscriber service offerings and drive growth.

By embracing this comprehensive set of Calix offerings, the multi-regional wireless internet service provider (WISP) says it is transforming its broadband network to fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), simplifying its business, and growing its value.

One of the largest WISPs in the country, TWN has delivered fixed wireless broadband connectivity to rural U.S. communities (through local utilities) for more than two decades. To meet the continued demand for high-speed broadband connections, TWN said it turned to the Calix Professional Services team for guidance on how to achieve the kind of bandwidth scalability only possible with fiber. The TWN team, guided by Calix Services experts—who routinely work with CSPs of every size and type across all networks and service-delivery lifecycles—have invested in the Intelligent Access EDGE and the AXOS E9-2 Intelligent Edge System to simplify its build of new networks.

According to the companies, the Intelligent Access EDGE enables TWN to reduce network complexity by consolidating subscriber-facing functions using the AXOS Subscriber Management Module (SMm). This simplified operations model enables rapid integration capabilities of AXOS, which means TWN has delivered subscriber services within four weeks of network installation (per new community). In addition, by deploying 10G XGS-PON using the E9-2, with 2.5 Gigabit uplinks into subscriber homes, TWN is securing a key competitive edge.

“For more than 20 years, we have helped local utilities keep their communities on the right side of the digital divide, but as subscribers demand more advanced network services, we need to reevaluate our business model as well,” said Ami Rodriguez, vice president of sales and marketing for TransWorld Network, Corp. “Calix is the only company with a comprehensive solution that shares our view of the network, recognizes the need to evolve to meet increasing bandwidth demands, and delivers the true carrier-grade solutions we need to make our fiber transformation a reality. Working with Calix Services enables us to roll out the right network on time and on budget to ensure we deliver unmatched broadband services to all our customers as efficiently as possible. We look forward to growing our partnership with Calix as we continue to expand our network to more rural communities.”

TransWorld Network says it will use the Calix Revenue EDGE platform to deliver on its strategic goal to provide the ultimate subscriber experience as well as the ultimate in customer care. The TWN team reports that it "is already seeing great results in customer support by leveraging Calix Support Cloud (CSC), enabled by the deployment of Calix GigaSpire BLAST systems." Calix Customer Success ensures TWN maximizes its investment in CSC by taking the unprecedented, real-time intelligence of the role-based platform and making it actionable.

With CSC, TWN can proactively address network issues before they become service interruptions, reduce escalations to improve call times, and minimize unnecessary truck rolls. Powerful connectivity (over a simplified network) and full remote management give TWN a comprehensive solution its competitors cannot match. To elevate the subscriber experience, TWN is also engaging Calix CommandIQ Personalization Services which will bring the TWN brand further into the subscriber home.

TWN says it will also utilize Revenue EDGE eLearning Enterprise Subscription Services to ensure accelerated adoption and operational efficiency of new processes within TWN. The TWN team will get further value from the comprehensive collection of EDGE Enablement campaign materials by using them to accelerate its go-to-market and engage with subscribers faster and in more actionable ways.

“TransWorld Network, Corp. is exactly the type of disruptor we delight in, as they are stepping up to address a pressing issue in a unique and innovative way,” concludes Skip Hirvela, vice president of sales for Calix. “Rural communities are chronically underserved when it comes to broadband, so local utilities being able to lean on a multi-regional provider to deliver fast, reliable service to their communities is vital. Merging our deep experience with local utilities and unique knowledge of industry best practices with TWN’s commitment to deliver broadband to rural communities across the country is a perfect combination. We look forward to fully supporting TWN as they transition to delivering fiber broadband and continue to help rural communities bridge the digital divide.”
