MRV Communications (NASDAQ:MRVC) and Sandvine (TSX:SVC) announced their collaboration to demonstrate a network functions virtualization (NFV)-based virtual customer premises equipment (vCPE) solution to enable application awareness at the service providers' access network.

The joint demonstration will be held within the live Proof of Concept (PoC) Showcase at the MEF16 conference in Baltimore from Nov. 7-10.

The solution combines MRV's OptiSwitch OS-V Edge vCPE, a CE 2.0 programmable platform with integrated X86 compute powered by the OPNFV release, and Sandvine's Network Policy Control Virtual Function (VNF), which enables Application-Aware Networking (AAN). The proposed solution is an implementation of a scalable, cost-efficient per-application SLA service at the access network.

"Leveraging the power of virtualization, Sandvine's PoC with MRV will demonstrate how IT managers can dynamically apply powerful, end-to-end network policy controls that promote the management of network operational costs, without the need for additional hardware," said Don Bowman, Sandvine CTO.
