Comcast this week announced that the latest upgrade to its Xfinity 10G network is now being deployed to customers in Jacksonville, Florida.

The operator said that Jacksonville is the latest community in Florida to roll out such network enhancements, setting the stage for the introduction of new symmetrical multi-gigabit internet options that can be delivered across Comcast’s existing networks with less cost, as reckoned by the company.

Comcast contends its Xfinity 10G network, via the next-generation Xfinity gateways, delivers the most advanced WiFi technology available, carrying 3x more bandwidth than competitive platforms to simultaneously power applications such as streaming, gaming, videoconferencing, and more.

The operator says its latest Xfinity Gateway provides a more reliable connection throughout the home. Customers receive wall-to-wall WiFi coverage via the company's xFi Pod unit, which extends coverage to hard-to-reach areas. Comcast added that it plans an offering of increased support for in-home WiFi through a “boost guarantee” later this year.

The company characterizes its Xfinity 10G network and its latest xFi Gateway as "a powerful combination that delivers ultra-low latency, also known as low lag, for those moments when response times matter most, [such as] video games, a fast-growing category with Xfinity households averaging more than one gaming console per home."

Comcast notes that its Xfinity 10G network passes more than 60 million homes and businesses. The company added that plans to launch a new in-home device that is “storm-ready” with cellular and battery backup to help keep customers connected even when the power goes out.

Comcast notes that it also recently accelerated the transformation of its network to a cloud-based architecture, which will allow it to deliver symmetrical, multi-gigabit speeds to both residential and business customers -- services that technically limited fixed wireless providers will not be able to deliver, according to the operator.

Javier Garcia, SVP of sales and marketing for Comcast’s Florida Region, commented:

“Our customers are using the internet for an increasingly number of things in their personal and professional lives, including working remotely, streaming live sports, 4K gaming and virtual reality. A truly reliable network is one that is not just always-on, but a network that can power multiple data-heavy applications across dozens of devices in their home. The Xfinity 10G Network delivers gig speeds, capacity, reliability, and low latency – the key factors making our connectivity experience superior to the competition.”

In February, BTR reported that Comcast and technology partner CommScope had tested the first prototype Full Duplex DOCSIS (FDX) amplifiers for 10G. Comcast first tested FDX amplifiers technology in September 2022, demonstrating the equipment's ability to deliver symmetrical speeds across a complete network-to-home 10G loop.

In the following demonstration from CableLabs’ 10G Showcase last year, Rob Howald of Comcast highlights multi-gigabit symmetric capability using the DOCSIS 4.0 full duplex mode of operation.
