Midco is now offering Midco Xstream Gig Internet service in Bowdle, SD, and three surrounding communities. The DOCSIS 3.1-based service also uses remote PHY and is available to both residential and business customers.

"Bowdle's gigabit speeds are made possible by cutting-edge network technology called remote PHY, which is particularly well-suited for smaller communities. Bowdle is the first in the nation to use it," said Midco Chief Technology Officer Jon Pederson. "As a result of this success, we hope to bring Midco Xstream Gig to many more communities."

The 1 Gbps service was first launched in Fargo, ND, last March, followed by other deployments in the Dakotas and Minnesota, most recently in and around Minot, ND, in March. Early deployments have used CCAP gear from Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) and modems from ARRIS (NASDAQ:ARRS) and Hitron Technologies. Midco plans to add other vendors' DOCSIS 3.1 modems as they become available.

The company says Xstream Gig is now available to more than 80% of its customers.
