Mediacom Communications is launching gigabit Internet speeds to 27 communities in parts of Delaware, Maryland and Michigan. The DOCSIS 3.1-based 1 Gbps service is available to both residential and business customers.
The launches include 19 communities in Delaware's Sussex County, and additional communities in southeastern Maryland and southwestern Michigan.
Mediacom prepped its network for DOCSIS 3.1 last year, completing deployments of CCAP gear from Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) and Casa Systems in December. The company first launched services a month later in Iowa with modems from Technicolor. The company has since added modems from Hitron and Ubee, and modems from other vendors will be added as they become available. The Hitron and Technicolor modems currently in use are gateways with built-in WiFi routers.
Mediacom currently offers DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit in more than 1,250 communities, as part of the company's plan to make the service available across its 22-state footprint. Other recent deployments include Gulf Coast markets in south Alabama and the Florida panhandle. In conjunction with each gigabit launch, Mediacom also introduces a 500 Mbps tier of service.
