AT&T (NYSE:T) is now offering its AT&T Fiber service in parts of the Monterey-Salinas area on California's central coast, including in parts of Santa Cruz and surrounding communities. The company plans to expand access in parts of Capitola and Salinas in the future.

The centerpiece of the FTTH service is near-gigabit (AT&T says up to 940 Mbps downstream) Internet, with bundles including video and voice service also available. AT&T Internet 1000 is $70 a month in a bundle or $80 per month standalone with a 12-month agreement. After a year, the price goes up to $90 a month.

"High-speed Internet has quickly become a preferred way to access information and communicate," said Luis A. Alejo, Monterey County supervisor, District 1. "Our residents want faster Internet speeds to take our area into the digital age and communicate with the people who matter most. We are happy that AT&T will bring more fiber capacity to our Monterey County communities."

AT&T Fiber is currently available in 54 metro areas nationwide, and the company plans to expand that to at least 75 metro areas, with a goal of reaching at least 12.5 million customer locations by mid-2019.
