ADTRAN (NASDAQ:ADTN) announced its first set of network elements to take SDN beyond principal framework to actual product implementation in broadband access networks. The Software Defined Access (SD-Access) network elements leverage the ADTRAN Mosaic architecture.

ADTRAN's suite of software defined network elements, the SDX Series, includes the following:

  • Passive optical network optical line terminals (PON OLTs)
  • Fiber-to-the-distribution point (FTTdp), leveraging copper and coax
  • IP/Ethernet aggregation, fabric and Carrier Ethernet 2.0 access switches/routers
  • Programmable customer devices such as residential gateways, WiFi access points and virtual CPE

The SDX portfolio is aligned closely with ON.Lab's CORD initiative for open architecture.

"ADTRAN is leading agile network solutions development. The SDX series of natively SDN-controlled access devices will enable operators to fast track the deployment of fully automated, web-scale networks," said Robert Conger, associate vice president, cloud and portfolio strategy, ADTRAN. "Service providers can rapidly create, deploy and upgrade applications independently for increased operational efficiencies, regardless of device, technology or service. This leads to more nimble business models, service innovations and improved revenue."

ADTRAN will demonstrate its Mosaic architecture with programmable network elements at the Broadband World Forum in London.
