Google Fiber (NASDAQ:GOOG) says it has closed on its deal to acquire Webpass, a fiber-based Internet service provider (ISP) with a presence in Boston, Chicago, Miami, San Diego and the San Francisco area. A similar deal to acquire Webpass affiliate Webpass Telecommunications is expected to close later this year.

Webpass, founded in 2003, offers residential Internet speeds of 100, 200 or 500 Mbps and business services tiers from 10 Mpbs to 1 Gbps symmetrical. The company operates fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) networks and has experimented with point-to-point wireless technology. Google Fiber has been investigating point-to-point wireless as an alternative to costly fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) buildouts.
