Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) has officially launched Xfinity WiFi on Wheels, or WoW.
The WoW, first announced and showcased at the INTX show in Boston in May, is a customized Ford T-350 van equipped with six Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) WiFi access points that sit atop a 40-foot tall mast. The WiFi has a 500-foot range and is designed to support up to 3,000 users. Comcast did a practice run recently at the 2016 Wizard World Comic Con in Philadelphia with speeds of more than 50 Mbps.
The MSO plans to use the van to provide WiFi at concerts, festivals, ballgames and other large events. Its first stop was the New Haven Arts and Ideas Festival from June 10-25, and the next will be the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia from July 25-28.
