At the SCTE/ISBE Cable-Tec Expo 2016 in Philadelphia in September, the Society will offer four days of technical workshops on gigabit Internet services, 4K UltraHD video, virtual reality and intelligent energy management solutions.

The 30+ workshops - each featuring multiple presentations by subject matter experts - will focus on such topics as DOCSIS 3.1, FTTx and the implementation and impact of new video experiences on existing networks, as well as software defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV) and other network technologies, workforce optimization solutions, and sessions informed by the SCTE's Energy 2020 program.

Designed to address both current and future industry needs, the Expo workshops will discuss: creating and managing DOCSIS 3.1 and wireless access architectures; economics, deployment considerations and benefits of all-fiber networks; the evolution of video services, including OTT, 4K UltraHD and IP delivery; a 360-degree view of SDN and NFV; and immediate and long-term solutions to reduce energy costs and consumption.

Specific workshop topics include:

  • The ability of operators to use big data analytics and machine learning to identify and isolate system and performance-level issues that can impact network health
  • A business-implications discussion of the cost-effectiveness of fiber-related approaches to capacity enhancement
  • Formatting, playback quality, distribution flexibility and other considerations as operators launch 4K UltraHD services, as well as the impact of virtual reality (VR) on operator bandwidth
  • Migration models for the shift to SDN/NFV, as well as discussion of how new platforms can co-exist with existing equipment and the role of SDN/NFV in the access network
  • How the Adaptive Power System Interface Specification (APSIS) can reduce power consumption by applying measurement and control methodologies powered by statistical monitoring and online learning

In addition to the workshops, SCTE/ISBE Cable-Tec Expo also will feature three separate two-day Boot Camps - on DOCSIS 3.1, FTTx and Wireless - Sunday, Sept. 25 through Monday, Sept. 26.
