Windstream (NASDAQ:WIN) announced the start of its 1 Gbps Internet service trial in Lexington, KY, with plans for a full launch in five markets during the first half of 2016.
In addition to Lexington, Windstream plans to launch gigabit service for residential and small business locations in Lincoln, NE; Sugar Land, TX; and Concord and Matthews, NC, during the first half of 2016. The network enhancements are also intended to let the company expand the availability of its Kinetic video service in Lincoln and Lexington.
The 1 Gbps service trial follows Windstream's recently announced expansion of Internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps to more than 800 markets, and Project Excel, a $250 million program to accelerate further upgrades of broadband speeds, support network capacity speeds and improve reliability.
The company received its cable TV franchise in Kentucky in October and launched video in Lexington earlier this month.
