According to ABI Research, worldwide broadband customer premise equipment (CPE) shipments are expected to reach 151.9 million by the end of 2014, driven by advanced technologies such as residential gateways, DOCSIS 3.0 and VDSL.

The research house expects global residential gateway shipments to grow more than 9% in 2014. Overall DSL and cable CPE device shipments are expected to drop slightly in 2014, though VDSL and DOCSIS 3.0 device shipments are expected to grow robustly, largely because of upgrade activity in North America and Europe.

DOCSIS 3.0 devices dominate the cable CPE market, ABI says. ABI expects shipments to grow 11% in 2014, representing nearly 85% of total cable CPE shipments. For 2014, fiber-optic CPE shipments are expected to grow around 16% YoY from 2013, reaching 41 million.
