The Wi-Fi Alliance has expanded its Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint program. Now, in addition to connection and WPA2 security for mobile devices in WiFi hotspots, Passpoint provides a method to establish new user accounts and connect WiFi-only devices such as tablets and notebooks.
Passpoint, which was launched in 2012, is based on Wi-Fi Alliance's Hotspot 2.0 Technical Specification. The Passpoint program expansion builds on its authentication and security mechanisms, adding online sign-up and immediate account provisioning, secure registration, and the capability for service providers to distribute their specific subscriber policies, such as which networks to join and in what order of preference.
