According to Hub Entertainment Research, over-the-top (OTT) video is a supplement to traditional pay TV rather than a replacement for it. The research house says cord cutting is not accelerating 90% of TV consumers still have a pay TV subscription. However, pay TV is sharing time with other sources: The average cable, satellite, or telco TV subscriber now uses an average of two online sources in addition to their pay TV subscription.

Among other findings:

  • People are watching on, or through, more devices: The average online viewer now uses 2.7 devices for TV viewing, including mobile devices and devices that connect their TV set to the Internet (up from 2.3 in 2013).
  • Netflix is a pay TV supplement: 87% of Netflix streaming subscribers also have a pay TV subscription, and they spend more time watching linear TV than they do watching Netflix.
  • Tablets are gaining traction as home viewing devices: 78% of tablet TV consumption occurs at home, up from 67% in 2014.
