ARRIS (NASDAQ:ARRS) has introduced Docker container software support for some of its home gateways, with the intention of enabling service providers to introduce third-party applications quickly and easily.

Docker software support will be available for the ARRIS NVG400 and NVG500 series of PON, LTE, Ethernet, and DSL solutions. Docker container software is an open source package than runs applications in different computing environments. The NVG platform with Docker software support is designed to allow service providers to integrate and remotely deploy third-party applications without impacting core gateway functions with out the need for full firmware release testing.

The NVG gateway platform is supported by ARRIS' ECO Service Management, which is designed to provide a network-wide view of Docker containers and enable operators to manage applications across their networks.

In other ARRIS news, the company is showcasing how it's utilizing Amazon's new Alexa Smart Screen and TV Device SDK that that supports the Alexa Presentation Language. APL is a new design language and toolset for building Alexa skills for different device types by combining voice control with customizable visual cues. ARRIS is demonstrating the technology at SCTE/ISBE Cable-Tec Expo in Atlanta.

Also at Expo, ARRIS is highlighting its work with the User Services Platform (USP), an evolution of the TR-069 protocol designed to enable faster, more efficient device management and control for operators, service providers, and consumers. It is based on the standardized protocol that the Broadband Forum developed to manage, monitor, upgrade and control connected devices in the home.

Integral to USP, ARRIS is launching two new ECO software components as part of its ARRIS HomeAssure home home network management platform. With the addition of ECO Control and ECO Envoy, HomeAssure expands to include a USP Controller and a USP Agent to complement the existing CPE WAN Management Protocol (TR-069) support that was already in place with ECO Manage. Other components include ECO Assist for CSRs, ECO Self-Services for the subscriber, ECO Monitor for network operations, and ECO Inquire for reporting.
