According to Parks Associates, more than 75% of U.S. broadband households use WiFi for connectivity in the home, and 50% use 3G/4G cellular services.
"WiFi is synonymous with Internet for many consumers today," said Harry Wang, Parks' senior director of research. "With a growing number of consumer electronics connecting to home WiFi and portable WiFi hotspots powered by a device accessing 3G/4G mobile networks, the WiFi network is playing a significant role in supporting consumer digital lifestyle and home-centric IoT applications."
Justin Doucette, senior director of product management at Linksys & Wemo, Belkin International, said: "WiFi is a critical utility in today's home and essential for enjoying the benefits of a smart home []. Many people don't believe they live in a smart home, but if they stream video from Netflix or online game with kids, then they are leveraging connectivity to improve their quality of life. Entertainment is the primary need for great WiFi as laptops, tablets, and smartphones have evolved from productivity devices to entertainment devices. Smart TVs, gaming consoles, and streaming media players are now commonplace in most homes. Now, convenience and security needs are helping items like smart lighting, thermostats and IP cameras to enter the home. All of these devices will become more and more a part of our everyday lives, and the need for a robust and seamless WiFi connection will only grow in the future."
