Midcontinent Communications has chosen AirTies Wireless Networks to deliver in-home WiFi to residential customers in its first test market. The deployment marks the first, publicly announced U.S. customer for AirTies.

Midcontinent serves more than 300,000 customers with Internet, cable TV, home automation and home phone services across Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Midcontinent will use AirTies’ Air 4920 wireless Smart Mesh APs (access points) to offer an in-home WiFi package that includes a broader range of wireless coverage throughout the home. Midcontinent plans to provide additional information about its service launch later this year.

AirTies uses multiple APs placed around the home to improve coverage. The company's offering includes:

  • Intelligent Networking that coordinates and optimizes performance across APs
  • AirTies Wi-Fi Mesh system, which creates alternate data paths and wireless links between multiple APs placed around the home
  • AirTies’ Client Steering technology that dynamically switches mobile devices between APs in real time, as well as within the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands to ensure optimal quality

AirTies, which has several customers in Europe, is new to the North American market and recently opened an office in Sunnyvale, CA. The office is in addition to the company's international headquarters in Istanbul and other offices in the UK, Netherlands and China. The company has appointed longtime employee Oz Yildirim as executive vice president and general manager of North America.
