The runup to the annual NAB Show in Las Vegas has started gathering steam. Press releases are coming in thick and fast, and most of them deal with streaming video technology.

From what we've seen so far, online video delivery remains a hot topic this year, as it has for the last few years. And as we've noted before, streaming video and IP technologies are blurring the lines between traditionally separate industries: Broadcast, cable, satellite, OTT and telco TV providers are all increasingly drinking from the same trough.

Arguably, streaming video holds high place among video technologies right now. It makes sense; adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming is central to multiscreen video - the ability to deliver content to any screen, including smartphones, tablets, PCs, smart TVs and even some newer set-top boxes - which has become a must-have service in today's competitive environment. Literally all the video providers are doing it, regardless of base technology/topology. It's well on its way to becoming the new normal.

According to Parks Associates, U.S. TV Everywhere penetration now sits at 40% of pay TV subscribers, and U.S. OTT penetration is about 70%. All of this is enabled by streaming video tech.

A few vendors taking various streaming video technologies to Vegas include Imagine Communications, Tightrope Media Systems, ENCO, StreamGuys, Net Insight and DVEO.

And that's just some of those we've heard from so far. Doubtless there'll be more as the show gets closer, and we'll cover those as well.

We'll also be at the show itself, naturally, seeing what's new and fun. If you'd like to meet up, drop us a line or say howdy on the show floor. No promises - our schedules get really tight really quickly - but we're always interested in seeing the groovy things.
