ANSI Approves Closed Captions, VBI Data

June 26, 2012
The American National Standards Institute has approved two SCTE standards dealing with closed captioning and VBI data.ANSI/SCTE 20 2012, "Methods for Carriage of CEA-608 Closed Captions and Non-Real Time Sampled Video," defines a standard for the carriage of CEA-608 closed captions and certain other vertical blanking interval (VBI) services in MPEG-2 compliant bitstreams constructed in accordance with ISO/IEC 13818-2.ANSI/SCTE 21 2012, "Standard for Carriage of VBI Data in Cable Digital Transport Streams," defines a standard for the carriage of VBI services in MPEG-2 compliant bitstreams constructed in accordance with ISO/IEC 13818-2. The approach builds upon a data structure defined in ATSC A/53 Part 4 (Digital Television Standard: Part 4 - MPEG-2 Video System Characteristics) and is designed to be backward-compatible with that method. Both documents are available at http://www.scte.org/standards/Standards_Available.aspx.
