Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) is building an incubator for 5G wireless technologies at the company's Santa Clara, CA, office. The facility, dubbed Ericsson D-Fifteen, is under construction and is expected to open this summer.

Ericsson D-Fifteen will include core capabilities of Ericsson R&D, focusing on 5G and IoT. The first facilities at D-Fifteen will include the D-15 IoT Studio hands-on testing ground and the D-15 Labs 5G testbed. The facility's name, Ericsson D-Fifteen, is a tribute to Lars-Magnus Ericsson's first kitchen workshop at Drottninggatan 15 in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1876.

Margaret Herndon, head of marketing and communications for Ericsson North America, said: "D-Fifteen will be a place for experimentation and collaboration, a showcase for the promising technologies that 5G will empower. This facility will bring together the brightest minds in Ericsson and, working with our partners, we'll tap into the fast-moving, boundary-breaking spirit of Silicon Valley to bring about the next evolution in mobile networks. We want our partners to dare, design and deliver all in one world-class facility."
