Fujitsu Quantum Devices and Sumitomo Electric Industries announce Multi-Source Agreement for 10-Gbit/sec transmission laser diode

March 15, 2002--Fujitsu Quantum Devices Ltd. and Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. have announced a multi-source agreement for a 10-Gbit/sec transmission laser diode (LD) module that enables the conversion of electric signals to optical signals in medium-to-long distance 10-Gbit/sec optical fiber networks.

Fujitsu Quantum Devices Ltd. and Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. have announced a multi-source agreement for a 10-Gbit/sec transmission laser diode (LD) module that enables the conversion of electric signals to optical signals
in medium-to-long distance 10-Gbit/sec optical fiber networks.

The 1.55-micron wavelength distributed feedback laser diode--a high-speed, high-capacity light source for optical networking--is integrated with an electro-absorption modulator using a reverse bias for high-speed modulation. This is integrated with a driver IC, which uses compound semiconductors to enable the electro absorption modulator to work at speeds of about 10 Gbits/sec. All the components are then mounted on what the companies claim is the industry's smallest class metal ceramic package.

The multi-source agreement establishes a standard for package size, pin configuration, and specifications with multiple vendors aiming to stabilize a product's supply.

This module will be displayed in FQD and SEI's exhibition booths at the OFC Conference, in Anaheim, CA, March 17-22, 2002.
